nebosklon

Serbo-Croatian

Etymology

From Russian небоскло́н (nebosklón). The accent nȅbosklōn is formed according to similar trisyllabic compounds.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /nêboskloːn/, /nêbosklon/
  • Hyphenation: ne‧bo‧sklon

Proper noun

nȅbosklōn or nȅbosklon m anim (Cyrillic spelling не̏боскло̄н or не̏босклон)

  1. (poetic, archaic) sky, horizon
    • 1898, Silvije Strahimir Kranjčević, “Prvi grijeh”, in Izabrane pjesme[1], Zagreb: Matica hrvatska, page 218:
      Sve p'jesak sivi, kameniti puti
      I gore mrki, tudji nebosklon!
All is just gray sand, rocky paths
And above – a dark, foreign sky!

Usage notes

  • Older writers likely used the form nȅbosklōn, as can be deduced from the rhymes and metre (see quotations). Dictionaries, beginning with Benešić (1949), only mention the form with shortened final syllable: nȅbosklon. HJP provides the accent nebòsklon which is an adaptation of the original Russian accent or theoretically derived from *nȅbo + *sъklònъ, but the form isn't found in poetry and such accentuation of Croatian compounds is in decline.
