From Proto-West Germanic *uʀhaitō; equivalent to ōret +‎ -a and thus cognate with Old High German urheizo. Originally an agent noun to āhātan (to call forth) (compare Gothic 𐌿𐍃𐌷𐌰𐌹𐍄𐌰𐌽 (ushaitan, to provoke, challenge)). For the variation between -t- and -tt-, compare ǣmette, variant of ǣmete (ant).
