oväsen

Swedish

Etymology

Borrowed from German Unwesen. Cognate of Danish uvæsen, Norwegian Bokmål and Norwegian Nynorsk uvesen.

Noun

oväsen n

  1. unpleasant and usually loud noise; din, racket
    Synonym: oljud

Now you'll have to stop making noise!

Usage notes

  • Often used with föra. Att föra oväsen means to make (unpleasant) noise.
  • Often considered more negative than väsen, which can have either neutral or negative connotations. In other words, if a festival causes oväsen, it is considered disturbing, whereas causing väsen could either be disturbing or merely noticeable.
