Etymology

From Old Norse víðátta of uncertain origin. Compare Norwegian Nynorsk vidåtte f and Icelandic víðátta f.

The o instead of etymologically correct å is used of the same reasons as similar words in Danish, compare Riksmål otte (“eight”). Today, however, spelling with å is common due to influence of Nynorsk etymological spelling rules.
