Cognate of Rarotongan pīngo‘i and piringo‘i “to pick out with tongs”; related to Tongan kofi and Samoan iʻofi “ibid.” both from Proto-Polynesian *kapi “to hold firmly between” from Proto-Oceanic *kapit “to hold stones or lid of an earth oven” ultimately Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *qapit.[1]
