Muong

Etymology

Cognate with Vietnamese bến (“port, wharf; station”), Tho [Cuối Thái Hoà] pen²⁴ ("river") (Nguyễn Hữu Hoành et al., 2022). The meaning "stream" in Muong is probably most primary. The item went through the semantic shift to "port, wharf" in Vietnamese, and displaced the reflex of *k-roːŋ (“river”) in Cuối Thái Hoà.

In the sense "station", a semantic loan from Vietnamese. The semantic shift is the straightforward in Vietnamese ("port, wharf > station"), but not in Muong.
