Etymology
Unknown, probably affixed *jaṅ + pa-, derived from Proto-Mon-Khmer *raaŋʔ (“light, to shine”) (compare to Khmer ស្រាង (sraang, “to glimmer”), Vietnamese rạng (“to dawn”), and Chinese 亮 (liàng, “bright; brilliant; radiant; loud and clear”)). Doublet of paḍaṅ.
