From Proto-Eskimo *patət- base, “be cold or frozen”

pat’snarluni (root pat’snar-)

  1. (intransitive) be cold (outside)
    Sun'ami enerpak pat’snarluni macartuq.
    This morning it’s cold but sunny in Kodiak.

Usage notes

The verb and its variations are used generally in conjunction with cold weather and places. By contrast qayarlluku is used when the sensation of cold is ascribed to people as in Quyarqani eqmerumauq (Because she is cold, she is all curled up). The form paceshnarluni is sometimes used to describe cold with regard to both weather conditions and things, as in Maqiwik paceshnartuq (The steam bath is cold).
