Etymology
From khoẻ, whose onset /xʷ-/ became /f-/. Analogous to how Middle Chinese labialized voiceless "laryngeal" fricative initial *xw- (as reconstructed by Baxter, 1992) yielded /f-/ in several modern Chinese varieties; for instance: Middle Chinese 花 (MC xwae) yielded Cantonese 花 (faa1), Guangdong Hakka 花 (fa1), Xiang 花 (fa1), and Gan 花 (fa1).
