Etymology

From khoẻ, whose onset /xʷ-/ became /f-/. Analogous to how Middle Chinese labialized voiceless "laryngeal" fricative initial *xw- (as reconstructed by Baxter, 1992) yielded /f-/ in several modern Chinese varieties; for instance: Middle Chinese (MC xwae) yielded Cantonese (faa1), Guangdong Hakka (fa1), Xiang (fa1), and Gan (fa1).
