Etymology

Inherited from Old Czech pohlavie, from Proto-Slavic *pogolvьje. Metaphorically it came to mean “grouping of persons by sex,” and then more narrowly “sex, gender;" equivalent to po- +‎ hlava (head). Compare Serbo-Croatian поглавље.
