Etymology

From Proto-Oceanic *boŋi-boŋi (early morning) (cognates with Samoan pogipogi (dawn, dusk, twilight) and Tongan pongipongi (morning, tomorrow))[1][2] reduplicate of *boŋi (see for more details, also compare with Samoan pogi, Hawaiian poni), from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *bəʀŋi (compare with Javanese wengi)[3]
