Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic попъ (popŭ), from Ancient Greek πάππας (páppas, “daddy, papa”). Compare also Aromanian popã, pãpã. Or alternatively, from Latin popa, papa, hence its presence in other neighbour languages. Doublet of papă.
