      Hi havia dues maneres d'empouar: la primera consistia a col·locar la neu en motlles d'una determinada mida i piconar-la perquè quedés ben premsada; la segona, a fer boles de neu que anaven creixent a mesura que rodolaven. Les pilotes grosses podien acostar-se a la poua o eren transportades per dos homes amb baiards i calçats amb esclops ferrats amb claus per adherir-se millor a la neu gelada. A vegades, les boles es deixaven vora la poua perquè es gelessin encara més.
      There are two methods of gathering snow for storage: the first consists of collecting the snow in moulds of a certain size and tamping it until well-packed; the second, of making snowballs which grew to the degree that they were rolled. The thick balls could be brought closer to the icehouse or were transported by two men with stretchers and hobnail boots in order to cling better to the new ice. Sometimes the balls were left next to the icehouse in order to freeze still more.
