From Proto-Indo-European *bʰrenḱ- (“to deviate, corrupt, fall off”). Cognate with prenke (“island”), Sanskrit भ्रंश् (bhraṃś, “to fall, deviate”), and perhaps Old Irish bréc (“lie”).
