Etymology

Typically considered a borrowing from Vulgar Latin brocca (“fork, roasting-spit”), from Latin broccus, but with unusual devoicing of the anlaut. Compare French broche, Italian brocca.[1] However, the devoicing may have taken place in Greek πρόκα (próka) (which see for details) by a common process of back-formation; in that case, the immediate source of the Albanian word would be Greek.[2] This may also better explain the semantics.
