rūsys

Lithuanian

Etymology

Cognate with Latvian rūsa (pit for storing potatoes). Further related to Lithuanian raũsti (to dig), Latvian ràust (to rake, dig).

  • According to Derksen it could be, along with Lithuanian raũpti (to dig), an extension of the base of ráuti (to pull out (roots)), which is related to Proto-Slavic *ryti (to dig).
  • Alternatively, according to Vasmer, could be related to ру́шить (rúšitʹ, to raze, tear down).
