Aphetic form of hraban, from Proto-West Germanic *hrabn, from Proto-Germanic *hrabnaz, whence also Old Saxon hravan, hraƀan, Old English hræfn, Old Dutch ravo, Old Norse hrafn. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱorh₂-. Aphesis of initial [h] before [l], [r] and [w] in High German was complete by the 9th C., but began earlier.
