regenworm
Dutch
Etymology
First attested 1563. From Middle Dutch *regenworm, from Old Dutch *reganwurm, from Proto-West Germanic *regnawurmi (see there for cognates). By surface analysis, regen (“rain”) + worm (“worm”), so called because of the animal's habit of surfacing after rainfall.
