reverse trap

English

Etymology

From reverse +‎ trap.

Noun

reverse trap (plural reverse traps)

  1. (slang, informal, sometimes offensive, sometimes derogatory) Someone who is anatomically female but who passes as male.
  2. (slang, informal, sometimes offensive, sometimes derogatory) A fictional character from anime, or related media, who is coded as or has qualities typically associated with a gender other than the character's ostensible gender; dansou.

Usage notes

  • Despite some considering the term to be offensive (see trap), the usage of the term, especially in the anime fandom, is usually neutral to positive, as being a "reverse trap" involves pulling off a perfect androgynous mix of masculine and feminine traits, thus creating a specific brand of prettiness.
