Hungarian

Etymology

Of debated origin:[1]

  • From Proto-Slavic *rǫbiti, in which case it must have arrived before the late 10th century or from an Eastern South Slavic variant before the late 12th century due to the preserved m, compare galamb, gomba.
  • From the same unattested stem of unknown origin as romlik, with the frequentative suffix -bol, cf. dorombol.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [ˈrombol]
  • Hyphenation: rom‧bol
  • Rhymes: -ol
