Etymology

Inherited from Old Anatolian Turkish [script needed] (söyünmek), intransitive form of Proto-Turkic *sög- (to roast), Nishanyan suggests that Proto-Turkic *sȫn- (to extinguish) is an evolution from the same source, if so, a doublet of sönmek. Cognate with söğüş.
