Etymology

Originally recorded in 1372 with the form esmeg,[1] essentially a compound of is (also) +‎ meg (and).[2]

This esmeg evolved in spoken forms to lose the initial vowel, with the medial "e" undergoing labialization and lengthening to shift from /e/ to /øː/, the nasal consonant falling out, and the final /ɡ/ shifting to /t/.[1]
