Etymology

Borrowed from Middle Low German sachtmodig. Cognate of Swedish saktmodig. Compare also sagte (quiet) and mod (mood, affect). Superficially similar words include: hovmodig (arrogant), tålmodig (patient), ædelmodig (magnanimous), godmodig (kind, friendly), vemodig (melancholic), overmodig (overconfident), frimodig (candid, frank), mismodig (despondent), heltemodig (heroic).
