scericge

Old English

Etymology

Uncertain. Perhaps an alteration of earlier *sċēawiċġe (compare Old English sċēawere (actor, clown)), equivalent to sċēawian (to show) +‎ -iċġe. Alternatively, perhaps an alteration of an earlier *sċerniċġe, where the first element is derived from Proto-West Germanic *skern (fun, play, sport, joking, mockery, jest) (compare Old Saxon skirno, skernio, skirno (actor), Old High German skerno, skernio, skirnio (joker, actor, clown).
