Dutch

Etymology

From Middle Dutch schimmel (rust), from Proto-Germanic *skimla-, probably related to *skīnaną (to shine), referring to the dull shine of a fungal layer or its white color.[1]

Cognate with German Schimmel, whence is borrowed the sense “grey horse” (due to the similar colour).[2]
