schranken

Dutch

Etymology

From Middle Dutch schranken (to place crosswise, especially to cross one's legs), derived from schranke. Compare German schräg (skewed, oblique, slanted). Not a direct cognate of German schränken, which is cognate with similarly umlauted Middle Dutch schrenken.
