Initial /ʃ/, for etymologically-expected /s/, presumably reflects assimilation to the following /ʃ(ʃ)/, which represents the regular outcome of Latin /fl/ in Neapolitan proper. (Cf. sciore < Latin flōrem.) Sound-symbolism may also have played a role.

Cognate with Sicilian susciari.
