Uncertain. Said to derive from s- (pejorative prefix) + coreggia (“flatus, fart”). Ultimately from a vulgar scureggia. Alternatively, it could be an adapted borrowing or a derivation related to Ancient Greek σκῶρ (skôr); cf. scoria.
