From second +‎ -th (ordinal suffix), by analogy with fourth, fifth, etc. Compare the replacement of Early Modern English fift and sixt with fifth and sixth.

Usage notes

  • In both speech and writing, secondth is more common in compound ordinals such as twenty-secondth than as a simple ordinal since their relative rarity makes them more susceptible to analogy.
