Etymology
Borrowed from Italian serraglio, from Ottoman Turkish سرای (seray, saray, “palace”), from Persian سرای (sarây). When loaned from Turkish to Italian, the word was connected to the pre-existing serraglio (“animal cage”), from Medieval Latin serrāculum. Cognate of French sérail, German Serail.
