Unknown. One theory suggests a derivation from Latin faenerārius, meaning either "hay seller" – from faenum (“hay”) – or "usurer" – from fenerō, faenerō (“to lend on interest”) – with an initial s- added in Romanian, but this is improbable. Another connects it to the Romanian word sfârlă, though this too is uncertain. One possibility may be a link to the Slavic term *svarati (“to delude, deceive, seduce”), as it is often used to mean a salesman without scruples or morals.^[1]
