From Malay soh hoon (vermicelli cellophane noodles), from Hokkien, possibly 索粉 or 線粉 / 线粉 or a clipping of the middle syllable of 山東粉 / 山东粉 (soaⁿ-tang-hún). Compare Tagalog sotanghon. See also Hokkien 冬粉 (tang-hún), English tang hoon.
