Irish

Etymology

From Middle Irish *soiscél.

Verb

soisgéul (verbal noun soisgéuladh)

  1. (Christianity, obsolete) preach the gospel, proclaim the good news

Usage notes

This form (without the -aigh suffix) is used in the Irish translation of the Bible by William Bedell and William Daniel. The Dictionary of the Irish Language lists it under the spelling soiscélaid, which is an archaism based on normalized Old Irish spellings. However, this verb is not attested until Early Modern Irish.
