Etymology

From Old Swedish spædher, from Proto-Germanic *spaþja- or Proto-Germanic *spadja-. Probably originally in the meaning of "thin" or "extended in length," therefore ultimately from the root of spänna (to pull, tighten, span, stretch thin). Cognate with Danish spæd.
