starur

Gutnish

Etymology

Compound of stare (starling) +‎ ur (prominent precipitation), roughly “starling precipitation”, possibly from an older Old Gutnish *starur.

The concept is probably related to the Swedish mainland term kråkmånad (crow month), which compared to starur is based on the arrival of the crow.

Noun

starur n

  1. precipitation that occurs at the time in spring when the starlings return; by extension: precipitation in March
