From Proto-Celtic *fstrew- (“sneeze”), from Proto-Indo-European *pster- (“sneeze”). Cognate with Breton strevial (“to sneeze”), Irish sraoth, Scottish Gaelic sreoth, and obsolete Welsh trew. Compare Latin sternuō and Ancient Greek πταρμός (ptarmós).
