From Proto-Celtic *fstrew- (sneeze), from Proto-Indo-European *pster- (sneeze). Cognate with Breton strevial (to sneeze), Irish sraoth, Scottish Gaelic sreoth, and obsolete Welsh trew. Compare Latin sternuō and Ancient Greek πταρμός (ptarmós).
