Borrowed from Dutch subject, from Latin subiectus (a subject, an inferior), subiectum (the subject of a proposition), past participle of subiciō (throw, lay, place), from sub (under, at the foot of) + iaciō (throw, hurl). The pronunciation is influenced by English subject.
