svalgang

Norwegian Nynorsk

Etymology

From sval +‎ gang. Cognate with Swedish svalgång and Danish svalegang. Literally, cool passage by surface analysis, but Den Danske Ordbog derives its Danish cognate from Old Norse svalar (beams), which explains origin of the -e- in Danish, but it is a rare noun in Old Norse itself (probably same as in Old Norse svalaskip).

The Swedish Academic Dictionary derives the Swedish cognate from sval (traditional wall construction), probably related to sval (cool), and dialectal Danish svale (extra wall) and Norwegian Nynorsk sval f (loggia).

Noun

svalgang m (definite singular svalgangen, indefinite plural svalgangar, definite plural svalgangane)

  1. (architecture) a loggia-like part of a stave church or a traditional Norwegian wooden house, similar to Russian гульбище
