From Proto-West Germanic *swart, from Proto-Germanic *swartaz, whence also Old Saxon swart, Old English sweart (English sward, swart, swarth, swarthy), Old Norse svartr, Gothic 𐍃𐍅𐌰𐍂𐍄𐍃 (swarts). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *swordo- (“dirty, dark, black”).
