Inherited from Old Norse tæra, from Middle Low German teren. Compare Icelandic and Norwegian Nynorsk tæra.

  1. (transitively with på) to wear on (so as to (slowly) reduce or make weaker)
    Sjukdomen tärde på honom

Usage notes

"Eat away at" works decently too (though "wear on" feels a bit closer), corresponding to the second sense.
