Etymology
túl (“beyond”) + -i (adjective-forming suffix). It is an adjective formed from a postposition, so that it can be used attributively to mark the qualifier of a noun (preceding it), rather than marking the modifier of a verb (or verb derivative), like an adverbial.

Usage notes
Most of the time, it is a separate word. In certain cases, due to tradition or changes in meaning, it is appended to the preceding word. Compare:

- tengerentúli (“transatlantic, American”) ― tengeren túli (“from beyond the sea(s)”)
