telek
Hungarian
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): [ˈtɛlɛk]
- Hyphenation: te‧lek
- Rhymes: -ɛk
Etymology 1
The etymology is disputed. It has been derived in at least three ways:
- From the same Proto-Finno-Ugric root as the verb telik (“to fill”).[1]
- From tel (“ground, soil”) + -k (noun suffix). For the same suffix, compare lélek (“soul”).[2]
- From Oghur *tilök “separated (area)”, from Proto-Turkic *til (“to cut”), via Old Hungarian telük.[3] In this case, possibly cognate with Kyrgyz тилке (tilke, “parcel, lot”).
Noun
telek (plural telkek)
- lot (US), parcel (of land), plot, piece of ground (an area or land used for building on or planting on)
