Inherited from Sanskrit तिरश्च (tiraśćá, “crosswise, horizontal”), in reference to animals' walking on all fours rather than erect and upright. Cognate with Prakrit 𑀢𑀺𑀭𑀺𑀘𑁆𑀙 (tiriccha).
