Etymology

A compound of tiril + tunge (tongue). The meaning or origin of the first part is unknown, may be from dialectal form of tverel. Attested by Christen Jensøn in 1646 as Tiretunge. Also attested by Hans Jacob Wille in 1786 in his book about Seljord.
