Usage notes

  • Lexicographers make a distinction between an allvarietetsordbok (“an all-varieties dictionary”), covering all varieties within one dimension, e.g. all dialects, and a totalspråksordbok (“a dictionary of the whole language”), covering all varieties of all dimensions of a language. Examples of the latter are the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) and Svenska Akademiens Ordbok (SAOB).
