treaghdán

Irish

Alternative forms

  • sroigheadán, troigheadán

Etymology

By surface analysis, treaghd (to pierce) +‎ -án. If the form troigheadán is oldest, though, then it may reflect troigh (foot) +‎ -adán as a calque of Latin pēdiculus (louse) mistaken for pĕdiculus (little foot).
