1. (linguistics, countable) hard mutation, provection, fortition

The hard mutation is common as an initial mutation in Cornish and Breton, but only occurs word-internally in Welsh, as in:

• Old English bedhūs (“bedehouse”) → betws (“chapel”)
• defaid (“sheep (pl.)”), tŷ (“house,

dwelling”) → defeity (“sheepfold”)

• pob (“every”) + peth (“thing”) → popeth (“everything”)
• pobi (“to bake”) + tŷ (“house,

dwelling”) → popty (“oven”)

• teg (“fair”) + -ach (“-er”) → tecach (“fairer”)

• treiglad llaes (“aspirate mutation”)
• treiglad meddal (“soft mutation”)
• treiglad trwynol (“nasal mutation”)
• treiglo (“to mutate”)
