Contraction of ty värr 'the worse', from Old Swedish thy vær, from Old Norse því verr. Compare Danish desværre, Norwegian Bokmål dessverre and Norwegian Nynorsk diverre, and Icelandic því miður. See Icelandic því and Proto-Germanic *wirsizô (“worse”) for more on the components.
