Related to shushunjë (“leech”). Could be a derivative with unique loss of initial sh-. Alternatively, if inherited, from Proto-Albanian *ūdsonja, from *ūd (“water”) + *-es (agent noun) + *-onja (feminine suffix) + *-az (diminutive suffix).
