utlova

Swedish

Etymology

ut (out) +‎ lova (promise)

Verb

utlova (present utlovar, preterite utlovade, supine utlovat, imperative utlova)

  1. to promise (something, or to bring about something)
    De utlovade allmänna val
They promised to hold general elections

Usage notes

  • Can take a thing someone promises (to bring about) as a direct object.
  • For "I promise to ...", "Jag lovar att ..." sounds more natural than "Jag utlovar att ..."
  • Idiomatic for "a promised X" (an X someone has been promised) in the past participle utlovad.
